- Published Date: October 24, 2024
Whilst we all should celebrate and support black communities all year round, every October shines a light on Black History Month and provides an opportunity to educate and empower. The UK have been celebrating Black History Month since the 1980’s. Amplifying the good while not forgetting the bad, to spread awareness and support breaking the cycle of racism towards black communities.
How can you help support Black History Month ?
1. Educate yourself / your children on Black History. This can be done by exploring historical documents in museums such as the Black Cultural archives in Brixton, viewing art that tells factual historic stories in galleries or exhibitions, watching documentaries, reading educational books and autobiography’s / biography’s by black authors, listening to podcasts or watching educational videos online.
2. Support Black owned businesses. Shopping at Black owned businesses is a step in supporting black owned businesses. Make the time to build a connection and learn more about the business owners, share and celebrate their businesses to your friends and family, or invite business owners to community events to help showcase their goods and services.
3. Donate or sign up to a Black British organisation or charity. You could also attend or volunteer at local or community events!
4. Attend Black History events. Google search local events near you and share what you are doing / learning to your friends and family, or bring a group with you. Be open to being educated on the depths of black history and engage in conversations.
5. Support Black Artists and Creatives. Explore and expand your knowledge on Music, Films, Theatre, Arts Books, by black artists and creatives. Donate to kickstarters to help up-and-coming artists and creative reach their innovative goals.
